66th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen: The year end battle between girls and guys will begin

Do you know what is Kōhaku Uta Gassen (紅白歌合戦)?

Commonly known as Kōhaku, which well, translates as “Year-end Song Festival“. This annual music event on New Year’s Eve that always ends slightly before midnight is produced by Japanese public broadcaster NHK and broadcast on television and radio, nationally and internationally by the NHK network. This year is their 66th time organizing this event since 1951! Amazing!

As the title says “Red and White Song Battle”, the program divides the most popular music artists of the year into competing teams of red, the red team akagumi (赤組, 紅組) that  is composed of all female artists (or groups with female vocals) and  the white team  shirogumi (白組) made by all male (or groups with male vocals).
To preform in Kōhaku, it is strictly by invitation and can be considered in a singer’s career as a big highlight because of the show’s wide reach. That is why to many artist that is an honor to preform and an aim to achieve in one’s singing career.

The songs and performers are examined by a selection committee put together by NHK. The basis for selection are record sales and adaptability to the edition’s theme.

    Ohara Sakurako – “Hitomi”
    大原桜子 「瞳」

She is one of the up and coming singer songwriter and actress that is making herself a big name this year.

Nogizaka46  – “Kimi no Na wa Kibou”
    乃木坂46 「君の名は希望」

This Japanese pop idol group is produced by Akimoto Yasushi. They were first introduced as AKB48’s “official rivals”. And they are becoming stronger each year. This year Oricon single yearly ranking, Nogizaka46 have showed rival like results against AKB group. They have 3 singles that are in the top 10 singles of the year at #6, #7, #8 while AKB48 keeps its #1 – #4 spots for 5 consecutive years. Next year will be exciting.

μ’s – “Sore wa Bokutachi no Kiseki”
    μ’s 「それは僕たちの奇跡」

Now this is a very interesting one. I believe it is a first for Kouhaku to invite an idol group from the 2D animation industry.

μ’s (pronounced “Muse“) is a school idol group in Love Live!. They’re the school idol group of Otonokizaka High School. The group consists of nine members and was initially formed with the purpose of preventing their school from closing. The interesting part is that the nine seiyuu(Voice actresses) form the group in real live and make a lot of performance in Anime festival and outdoor events.
This is the group that made all the otakus crazy about the whole of 2014 and 2015.

Gesu no Kiwami Otome – “Watashi Igai Watashi Janai no”
    ゲスの極み乙女。 – 私以外私じゃないの

They are another exciting band to introduce. Gesu no Kiwami Otome is one of those bands that lots of Japanese youngsters like these days. Hip-hop/progressive is what they described as they music style and it’s really interesting to listen. Find it out yourself.

    Superfly – Beautiful”

One of the power house vocalist in Japan music industry. She has sang many wonderful opening songs for some really popular dramas in Japan, like Dr. X season 1-3 and her “Beautiful” Single for 2015 Summer Drama [Mothers’ Game].

    Special mention:

    MISIA – “Orphans no Namida”
    MISIA -「オルフェンズの涙」

An R&B artist, her music has a more soulful, even bluesy, quality to it. It is her 2nd time performing for Kouhaku after her 2012 live telecast performance in  Namibia Republic, Africa.

Hope this gives you a brief idea of what is Kouhaku Uta Gassen and the things to look out for this major event in Japan Year End.

Wishing everyone a happy new year!!!!
