I was never really a fan of ONE OK ROCK until recently when my band started doing covers of their songs during practice.
As a rock musician myself, I thought I’d grabbed the chance to watch their third live in Singapore on 20 Jan.
This time, they were touring Asia to promote their latest album ‘AMBITIONS’.
Over the years, the band managed to establish a relatively large fan base in Singapore. The live was held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, and this is actually their biggest show in Singapore yet. As expected, it was nothing short of brilliant for the thousands of fans present.
Just 30 minutes before commencement, the venue was already packed with hardcore fans. Soaking in that pre-concert atmosphere was already enough to make one giddy with excitement!
With the lights dimmed and background music fading away, they opened the show with their new song Bomb Away.
Fans threw their hands in the air, screaming the names of their favourite band members.
ONE OK ROCK showed its true prowess when the song hit the chorus, sending chills down our spines. The crowd was doubly pumped with Jibun Rock‘s funky bass line by their bassist Ryota, but my favourite song is still Deeper Deeper.
While we were still headbanging to the heavy tunes, the mood quickly changed with Taking Off from their newest album that had a lighter tempo. The combination of Taka’s powerful vocals and Toru’s over-driven guitar had the fans in euphoria.
With the sick drumbeats laid by Tomoya, the band showcased one of their hit songs Re:make. At this point, I could feel every fiber of my being vibrating with anticipation as adrenaline coursed through my veins.
During the MC session, ONE OK ROCK’s band members greeted us in English. Even though Ryota was not very fluent, his sincerity still charmed the spectators. I was however really amazed by Taka’s command of English; despite not having any experience studying the language abroad, he was able to express himself perfectly!
Fans stuck translucent coloured-stickers on their smartphone torchlights and used their devices as lightsticks while swaying to the infamous ballad Wherever You Are. Some even had tears in their eyes.
The band also showed us their creative side with their encore piece by re-arranging the lyrics of one of their new song American Girl to Singapore Girl. They had the crowd in hysteria as girls swooned to the beat.
The live ended with ONE OK ROCK’s most popular recent piece Kanzen Kankaku Dreamer, leaving us with an energy boost and our hearts filled with great memories.
See you again, ONE OK ROCK!
I can’t wait for the next live in Singapore!!!
