Brought to you by the award-winning Rouge28 Theatre (UK), watch the beloved Japanese tale of Urashima Taro come to live at Esplanade Theatre Studio through stunning puppetry, drama and video projections.
Follow the story of Urashima Taro, a poor fisherman who is rewarded for saving a turtle with a journey to an underwater kingdom. He is brought to the Dragon Palace deep in the ocean, and soon finds himself captivated by the enchanting princess Otohime. Tempted by promises of eternal pleasures should he remain in the palace, our protagonist initially chooses to abandon his responsibilities on land, only to slowly slip into a nightmarish reality.
The play focuses on the themes of lust, obsession, betrayal and loss, enacted through a performance of seamless puppetry, superb accompanying video effects and clever use of shadow play.
The mesmerising visuals of the show create a contemporary vision of an ancient Japanese myth, transcending both Japanese traditions and Western modernity with its truly unique duet between actor and puppet.
Solo artist Aya Nakamura will impress you with her versatility in being both a puppeteer and an actress. As multi-award winning theatre maker specialising in puppetry, she weaves her puppets into the story to deep, revealing to you a world of duality, expressing herself as both manipulator and manipulated, shadow and light, visible and invisible. She was awarded Best Puppeteer at the International Puppet and Animation Festival for Adults in Warsaw 2017.
Originally from Japan, Nakamura spent her teens in Singapore before settling down in London in 2000.
